SELLING POWER

HOUSE-TO-HOUSE CANVASS SUGGESTED WAITEMATA BOARD’S IDEA A suggestion that a house-to-house canvass be organised to increase the number of consumers of electricity at Takapuna and Northcote was discussed at a meeting of the Waite mata Electric-Power Board this morning. The chairman, Mr. J. W. Hayden, said that 70 per cent., of Birkenhead ratepayers were consumers, while Northcote and Takapuna had only 50 per cent. It was suggested that a man be put on to canvass the houses. Mr. S. E. Kennings said local expansion would mean an increase in consumers. Once electric light was laid on, other business would follow in power consumption. It was decided that a report on the actual number of houses connected up at present be submitted to the board in committee on Monday when the question of the advisability of a house-to-house canvass would be decided. The secretary-treasurer’s report stated that the gross sales of current for the month of August amounted to £5,004 7s, as compared with £3,809 7s 6d for the corresponding month last year, an increase of £1,194 19s 6d. For the five months of the financial year the receipts from the total sales amounted to £25,052 11s 7d as against £18,998 18s lid for the same period of the previous year, an increase of £6,053 12s Bd.
