SUSSEX ARRIVES
COAL LOADED SUCCESSFULLY REASON FOR SHORTAGE On Thursday the Union Company's Sussex wirelessed that she was short of coal and might require extra fuel to enable her to reach Auckland. The collier Kaitoke was advised by wireless, and at 8 a.m. she tied up to the Sussex, which had run into a sheltered position off Ohora Bay, about 30 miles south of North Cape. Coaling operations were begun immediately, and by 3 p.m. 60 tons of coal —sufficient for the vesesl to reach Auckland —were transferred.
Fortunately, the Sussex enjoyed calm weather throughout the whole of her trip, and the coal shortage resulted in a loss of only 12 hours. The position was never a serious one, and arose out of the fact that a considerable quantity of the coal loaded for the voyage was perished, and its heating power was low.
