There is none which holds the general public with.such a tenacious grip. Considering the mild indifference with which it was received when it was first presented in Paris and Milan, in 1859, this is remarkable, but to-day it has the honour of being sung more times than any other. Last evening’s performance by the Fuller-Gonsalez Company was greeted with the enthusiasm one has come to expect for “Faust.” The more popular melodies were given unstinted applause, particularly the “Soldiers’ Chorus,” “Gentle Flowers in the Lew,” and “The Jewel Song.” Despite its faults, “Faust” is studded with many lovely numbers.
