“EXCLUSION OF CHRIST”

MINISTER ATTACKS LODGE SYSTEM SECRECY CONDEMNED (Special to THE SUN) MART ON, To-day. The Lutheran pastor, the Rev. Mr. Heidrich, has asserted from the pulpit “that the principles of all lodges are opposed to the principle of orthodox Christianity.” Mr. Heidrich said he found in the lodge an enemy and a grave spiritual danger. He condemned the lodges for their secrecy. The outside world saw only the benefit side; the other side, claiming a religious influence, a brotherhood of man, and a system of morality, being hidden from the uninitiated. “The lodge system of morality is opposed to that of the church,” he said, “being built on a false basis. It is a mockery. The lodge teaches a salvation by character, and builds up a brotherhood by the exclusion of Christ.” Mr. H. J. Fowler, representing the local Oddfellows’ Lodge, has replied: “The lodges do not attempt, and never have attempted, to usurp the function of the Church. What they teach is but a stepping-stone to the higher ministry of the Church, and, as quoted by Mr. Heidrich, what is promulgated for the purpose of leading men to a higher appreciation of their whole duty. Can such a conception of man’s duty ignore the Son of God? We know that it cannot, and does not.”
