Helen Wills Beats Tilden’s Conqueror In Mixed Net Title
Miss Helen Wills defeated Fritz Mercur, recent conqueror of Bill Tilden, in straight sets, u—3, G—4, in an exhibition match at Forest Hills, New York, last month. The match produced an interesting test, of Miss Wills’s abilities against one of America’s high ranking men players. Miss Wills’s stroking was fully as hard ;i« her opponent’s throughout, and she scored numerous placements with her blistering drives from the base line, also putting across a service ace. While the match was nothing more than an exhibition marked by court courtesies on both sides, it should not be taken as proof positive that since Mercur beat Tilden and Miss Wills beat Mercur, Helen could trim Tilden. Nevertheless, it gives some indication of the power and precision of the girl champion’s play. Few men, playing all out, could beat her.
