Favourites Have Bad Day at Wanganui
BIG SURPRISES ON THE FLAT to TUB SUN) ALTHOUGH Episode was regarded as a “racecourse certainty” yesterday, lier downfall \as but one where hot favourites came to grief, not one scoring in the eight events on the first day's Wanganui card. The two principal handicap events on the flat were won by big outsiders, returning substantial double-figure dividends.
WANGANUI. Thursday. The Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring meeting opened to-day in fine weather, though rain threatened. The going was good after the recent rain, and the attendance also good. The totalizator handled £22,770, against £19,21S last year, an increase of £3,552. Maiden Race For the Maiden Race, The Warden was favourite, carrying £350, Marica £3lB, Teremoana £275 and Cashier £268, all being evenly supported. At start Salt Petrel lost his rider, Marica going out to make the pace from Mauriaena, The Warden, Skypoint, Cashier, Teremoana and Baskier Marica still acted as pilot at the bend, but closely followed by Mauriaena, Cashier and The Warden, with a gap to Skypoint, Foreign Fancy and Teremoana. Once straightened up Cashier asserted his claim and came on to win by three-quarters of a length. The. Warden was a neck in front of Teremoana, who got up on the post. Mauriaena was fourth a neck away, followed by Otauru Lass, Skypoint, Marica, Foreign Fancy, Black Odin and Baskier. Okehu Hurdles Cohesion £522 was a good favourite for the Okehu Hurdles, with Gaze £428 and Kilburn £350 next best supported. Beaumont, Glengariff and Olympic were the early leaders, the last-named jumping the first fence ahead of Beaumont. Glengariff, Brigadier Bill, Kilburn and Cohesion, with Gaze last. Brigadier Bill lost his rider at the second fence. Past the stands Olympic was piloting
Beaumont, Glengariff, Cohesion, Kilbum, Polyphemus, Troilus, Vexatious and Gaze last. Beaumont ran up to Olympic at the fence by six furlongs, but the order was little changed, save, that Cohesion was making a forward move, and still Gaze was last. Gaze threaded a way through crossing the top, and followed Beaumont, Glengariff, Olympic and Polyphemus into the straight. Going to the front after the last hurdle was jumped. Gaze held his own and won by a length. Vexatious getting up to beat Glengariff on the post by half a head. Beaumont, Polyphemus, Troilus and Cohesion followed in that order. Putiki Hack There was heavy support for Singleton in the Putiki Hack, the top-weight being entrusted with £749, Moorgas £591, Gold Cure £491 and the Pale Star —Vigilance bracket £439 being backed in that order. Vigilance was smartest to begin, and was followed out of the straight by Flying Shot, Moorgas, Calamine, Discourse, Pale Star. Kawhakina and Quarter Deck. Running down the back stretch the leader had a break of three lengths on Flying Shot, who was followed by Calamine, Moorgas, Quarter Deck. Kawhakina and Gold Cure, and Singleton. The last-named moved up at the three
furlongs, and Vigilance still a cross the top and into the straight. Flying Shot and Moorgas Singleton heading the remainder. Nothin*, had a chance with Vigilance, v. off Flying Shot to win by a length. Moorgas was third two and a-half lengths away, closely followed . Singleton, Calamine. Kawhakina, Go Cure, Pale Star and Quarter Deck. Seafield Handicap The Seafield Handicap was an even betting race. Pangolin £t>99, Partaga £490 the King Lu-Waltzer bracket £ 465, and Hay Guard £385, being the order. Pangolin, King Lu. Kilperonp.,rtaera Te Koroke, Royal Game. Ga.dant and Keddar was the order into the back stretch. At the five and Partaga were in front of Royal Game, Kilperon and King Lu. * Game was in the lead as they crossed the top. being followed by Pangolin. " e Koroke, Partaga, Keddar and culus into the straight. Te koroke looked like winning at the distance, but Pangolin came at him, ana then Partaga flashed up to beat Te Koroke by a short head, with the favourite half a length away. Kilperon was fourth, just in front of Royal Game, and the next to finish were King Lu, Orazone, Lucy Rose and Hay Guard. Wanganui Guineas In the Guineas Episode carried £1,029, Consent £332, Moutoa Treasury £315 and Full Feather £291. They got away to a good start, Episode being smartest on her feet, making for the rails with Lucky Light as they ran round the bend toward the six furlongs, where she was in front of Lucky Light, next being Full Feather, Consent, High Falutiifi and Cyrille, with Moutoa Treasury last. Lucky Light kept with Episode in the run down the back stretch, and came round the bend alongside the favourite, with Consent close up, Full Feather next, and Moutoa Treasury and High Falutin’ following, with Cyrille a long way back. Consent got to Episode at the distance, and the pair came away from the field to fight out a fine finish, the filly going under by a short neck. High Falutin* was third, four lengths away, followed by Moutoa Treasury, Lucky Light and Full Feather, Cyrille being last a long way back. Durie Hack
Knightlike was the elect of backers for the Hurie Hack, carrying £770, nearly £l5O more than Te Atiawa, and there was a big drop to Callanmore £3OO and Holus Bolus £239. TJpoko was chopped out at barrier rise. Avoncourt showed out from Te Atiawa, but when they had settled down Te Atiawa assumed the lead from Avoncourt and Sovena, and Banket had run into second place at the four-furlong peg, followed by Rash, Hesert Lad, Avoncourt and Knightlike. Into the straight the order was Te Atiaw’a and Banket clear of Hesert Lad, Rash, Knightlike, Sovena and Avoncourt. Nothing could make any impression %on Te Atiawa, and the Chief Ruler gelding x got home by half a length from Hesert Lad, who beat Banket by a short head. After a late run Sovena just beat Knightlike for fourth place, Avro, Monsogno, Upoko and White Ringlet being next Marangai Handicap
In the Marangai Handicap Valkon £490, Queen Arch £442, Blimp £405 were evenly supported, with a drop to Horomea £278. Blimp was quickest on his feet, a.nd in the rush for positions he took the lead out of the straight from Vivo and Valkon. There was some crowding at the turn, just past the judge’s box. Nukumai got on the heels of another horse, tossing his rider. At the six furlongs Blimp was making the pace from Vivo, Horomea, Queen Arch, Captain Gazeley, Talisker, and Valkon, but running down the back Vivo went into the lead from Blimp, Catkin. Queen Arch, Talisker and Valkon. Coming round the
home turn Blimp and Vivo were the leaders, Catkin being next, with Queen Arch and Talisker following, and Valkon still well back. Catkin collared the leaders in the run to the judge came on to win by half a length from Blimp. Valkon finished third, length and a-half away, only a nose in front of Queen Arch. Vivo, Talisker. Horomea and Royal Mint foil lowed in that order. Flying Handicap In a big pool on the Flying Handi cap Staghunter £586, Lady's £476 and Tea Time £475 were best backed. After some delay thev strac gled out of the barrier, Sagittarius bein" left, and Limited, Star Stranger and Laughing Prince missing the jump out Helotis slipped into the lead at once and showed the way down the back t Tea Time, Lady’s Boy, Starboard Light, Oration. Stagliunter, Broad Acre and Benzora. Helotis was snil the pilot across the top and into the straight, where she was followed byTea Time, Oration, Lady’s Boy, Broad .A.cro and Reremoana. Though Te, Time and Oration challenged in th t run home, Helotis held them off to win by half a length from Oration whl! beat Tea Time by a length.
