BEAUTIFYING TAURANGA SOCIETY’S SPRING SHOW The Tauranga Beautifying Society hold its spring show yesterday, in the parish hall. Owing to the stormy weather during the last week, the number of entries were not up to the usual, but the blooms shown were first-class. In the daffodil divisions the prize-win-ners were: Mrs. H. P. Clark (S), Mrs. F. H. Hammond (4), Messrs. D. 11. Corrigan and A. J. Sladden. Champion trumpet daffodil was won by Mr. D. H. Corrigan, and “other than trumpet” fell to Miss Maxwell. In cut-flower sections, the first-prize winners were: Mesdames F. Boyd, H. P. Allen, H. P. Clark, J. B. Beale, W. S. Harris, Bennett, W. Harvey, Misses A. Beale, P. Phelan, P. Taylor, Padlie, and Messrs. R. V.- Cazalett and A. J. Sladden. ' Decorative Classes.—First-prize winners: Mesdames J. B. Beale and T. H. Phillips and Tudhope, Misses P. Phelan, Butcher. Decorated table (adult), Mrs. R. P. Balgent. Decorated table (girl), Miss Willcock. Decorated mantelpiece, Mrs. R. P. Baigent. Posy bouquet (girls), Miss A. Beale. A feature of the show was the splendid collection of citrus fruit shown by Mr. J. H. Davidson. Other prize-winners in the citrus fruit class were: Lemons (cured and uncured), Mr. C. Hansen; sweet oranges, Mrs. Phillans; marmalade oranges, Mr. C Hansen; grape fruit, Mrs. J. B. Beale. The attendance was good. WAIKATO CLERGY CONFER

RURIDIACONAL BOARD MEETS The first conference of the netvlyformed Ruridiaconal Chapter was held at Cambridge on Wednesday, Rural Dean Rev. L. Harvie presiding over an attendance of 13 clergymen from various parishes of the deanery. Among those in attendance was Bishop Cherrington. An ail-day conference was held at the vicarage. The conference decided to hold chapter meetings once every two months, the next to be held at Frankton. It was agreed that the ooard, consisting of the clergy as well as the laity, meet next March. The conference decided that a missionary festival be held at Cambridge oil November 29. Rev. C. W. Clark, of Cambridge, was appointed secretary of the chapter. MATAMATA CRICKET CLUB - At the annual meeting, Mr. W. E. Jtyres. presided. The report and bal-ance-sheet weye adopted, the latter showing a credit of £3 19s Bd. OTAHUHU SCHOOL CONCERT The financial position of the funds of the Qtahuhu Public School will benefit to a large extent as a result of the concert held i|i the Otahuhu Public Hall’ on Wednesday. There was a large attendance of parents and friends of the scholars, and the efforts of the children were well received. The children’s items were very well given, and reflected great credit on the efforts of Miss Clark, who was responsible for their training. The proceedings were opened by an item by Mrs. Andrew’s orchestra, and other items were contributed as follow—Dorothy Marris, “The Duck’’; scholars, “Twilight Land”; Shakespearean scene from “Two Gentlemen of Verona,” (Julia. WHANGAREI TOPICS The Prime Minister is to be approached by the Whangarei Chamber of Commenl?, and representatives of local bodies, with a view to securing an unrivalled area of scenic beauty at Bream Head, as a national reserve. This decision was reached at the Whangarei Chamber of Commerce meeting last evening, after an address by Cr. L. W. Nelson, representing the borough, who urged united effort to secure national recognition of this little known, but wonderful, example of New Zealand’s native bush. * * * Mr. A. W. Wellsted addressed the Whangarei Chamber of Commerce last evening relative to the commerce train which is visiting Whangarei and the North early in November. Several suggestions were adopted and all the public bodies are acting together in organising a representative welcome, and itineraries of varied interest, illustrating the potentialities and beauties of the North.

HAURAKI AFFAIRS i NEW CHEESE FACTORY A start was made on Thursday morning witfi the erection of a four vat cheese factory at Waitakaruru for the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company. Mr. E. A. Chester, of Netherton, has the contract, and the factory is expected to be ready for use by November. Heavy polling, but considerable plump voting, took place at Netherton on Wednesday in the election of Qve trustees for the newly constituted Netherton Drainage Board. The result was:—J. A. Reid, 104: E. A. Chester, 82; George Buchanan, 78; F. T. V. Johnston* 70; B. Halligan, 39; H. E. Hill, 36; H. J. Hare, E. Jamieson, 23; J. Wakeham, 22. The first five were elected. . * * The Hauraki Plains County Council met at Ngatea yesterday, Cr. E. L* Walton presiding. The Minister of Lands wrote declining to allow the council to use metal removed from a roadside drain on the Torehape Road unless payment was made. It was contended that in effect this would mean increasing the subsidy. Approval of the Waihou River as sufficient access, in lieu of a road, to an area of swamp in Awaiti desired for Has planting was granted. The treasurer, Mr. E. A. Mahoney, reported that the council’s chare from fTie heavy traffic pool was £2Ol Gs, compared with £ 228 6s Id last year.

OTAHUHU BOROUGH COUNCIL The Otahuhu Fire Brigade applied to the Otahuhu Borough Council last evening asking for the purchase of 500 feet of new hose. After a short discussion it was referred to the finance committee, the Mayor remarking that there was very little hope of an early purchase on account of the low state of the borough finances. i It was decided to pay the quarterly subsidy of £6 5s due to the Auckland Mounted Rifles Band. Permission was granted to the committee of the Hospital Patients’ Wireless Equipment Fund, to take up a collection in the borough on Friday, September 28. Mr. R. B. Todd was appointed delegate to attend. the conference of local bodies to deal with the matter of transport. The building inspector reported that permits had .been granted to the val’i« of £12,011 for the month of August. The Mayor. Mr. R. B. Todd, reported the result of a deputation of local bodies, which waited on the Minister of Public Works, urging that some of the local bodies who have laid roads down in permanent material,! be granted assistance from the funds of the Main Highways Board. The fact was strongly impressed on the Minister, that although the council had spent over £ 24,000, no grant had been made on the original formation, and so far no subsidy had been received on the maintenance of the main highway. Mention was made that those local bodies who had delayed the carrying oflt of permanent work were now receiving a subsidy of iy> to £3 for ’All the surrounding bodies had been subsidised on the work done, and were “backing their carts in for a second helping,” before the Otahuhu Council received a penny.
