AMATEUR BILLIARDS

PLAY IN SEMI-FINALS ROBERTS BEATS VALENTINE E. V. Roberts defeated H. F. Valentine last evening in. the first semifinal for the Billiards, Ltd., Shield. The match attracted a large “gallery.” Roberts as usual was quick to settle down to scoring and reached the first hundred marks with a good lead, making breaks of 25 and 20 at his first two visits to the table. Valentine took a long time to settle to his usual game, but eventually made runs of 21, 25 and 22. At this stage the scores read: 269—172 in favour of Roberts, who was playing a nice, steady game. By red-ball play he strung together breaks of 59 and 75, this giving him a commanding lead. A little later he added a further break of 45. His opponent then commenced to show his usual form and in six visits to the table added breaks of 41, 20, 22, 21 and 42 to his credit. The scores were then 413 —341 in Roberts’s favour. Valentine continued to play a great uphill game and further efforts of 24, 45 and 20 made the scores, 483 —471. The game became very exciting at this stage, but over-eagerness by Valentine gave his opponent a chance, which he took advantage of and reached his points. The final scoi'es were: E. V. Roberts, 500: breaks of 25, 20, 22, 20, 59. 75, 44; average, 10. H. F. Valentine, 480: breaks of 21, 25, 22, 25. 40, 22, 21, 42, 24, 28, 20. E. J. Morrison plays A. Scott to-night, the winner to meet E. V. Roberts in the final.
