THE FRIENDLY BULLET

THERE was destroyed in South'and recently a horse that had reached the remarkable age of 31! This was the trotter Octoroon, a well-known and successful performer in Southland and Otago a quarter of a century ago. Octoroon’s Turf career extended over a period of five years, after which she proved a successful matron, among the better-known of her family being Walroon, Harold Jun., and Quadroon. Mr. G. Smith, who owned the King Harold mare, said that she was in great condition when destroyed and would probably have lived many more years. He, however, was. leaving the district, and he had no wish to see his favourite fall into unfriendly hands, so he used a bullet. It is ah experience in the life of an owner that will take some beating.
