DELIGHTFUL COMEDY

“MR. WHAT’S HIS NAflflE”

The position of a man who loses his memory, marries and then recovering his memory, meets his original wife again on the same day, is described in “Mr. What’s His Name,” a three-act comedy adapted from the French by Seymour Hicks, now being produced at His Majesty’s Theatre by Percy Hutchison and his company. Adolphe Noblet, sauce manufacturer, is believed to have been killed on April 1, just five years before the play begins. His wife, Juliette, marries again and brings up a family. In the meantime a new hairdresser appears in Paris. He is so fascinating that he becomes involved in innumerable affaires and becomes the centre of innumerable jealousies.

The attractive hairdresser is none other than M. Noblet, who was not killed, but who lost his memory and now goes under the name of Leopold Trebel. His former wife engages him to come to her apartment to dress her hair, but when he goes he meets a doctor, who restores his memory by hypnotism.

So Noblet finds himself with two wives, only one of whom he recognises. He is accused of infidelity by Juliette’s friend, Sylvaine, and the situation becomes even more strained when his other wife appears on the scene. Finally, however, everything is arranged satisfactorily. Noblet conveniently loses his memory once more and returns to his hairdressing and his second wife.
