OVERSTAYED PERMITS
HINDU AND CHINESE FINED BOTH WILL BE DEPORTED A Hindu and a Chinese who had overstayed the term allowed by their temporary immigration permits were fined £lO and £2O respectively at the Police Court this morning. Deportation order* were also made. Mr. T. C. Rowe appeared for tho collector of customs. Ah Tim, aged 25, pleaded guilty to exceeding the time allowed him by five months. The Hindu, Bir Singh, aged 38, sai<t that he had applied for an extension that only expired in August. It was explained by Mr. Rowe, howeevr, that Singh meant August, 1927. He had overstayed his permit by a year. “We have not had the trouble with Indians that we have had with Chinese,” he said, “though there are still a few to be rounded up.” Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.: Can he pay a fine? Sub-Inspector McCarthy: Well he had £l2O when he was arrested yesterday on his way to the boat. Singh will leave New Zealand by the Marama tomorrow.
