CAMBRIDGE HORSE FAIR

SPIRITED BIDDING (From Our Own Correspondent.) CAMBRIDGE, Tuesday. The Cambridge annual spring horse fair, recognised as the biggest horse sale in the Waikato, and one of the most important in the Dominion, conducted by the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company, commenced at the local saleyards this morning and will be continued to-morrow and Thursday. Much of the former glory of the Cambridge Fair has gone forever with the inroads of motor traction, but despite thip there is evidence at this year’s fixture that the heavy duty farm horse is still a necessity, and that there is still considerable activity in the province in the breeding of draught horses. The attendance at the sale to-day was quite satisfactory, and in the afternoon, when broken draughts were offered, there were fully 500 farmers present. The catalogue includes 348 unbroken and broken draughts and 85 light horses. i The quality of the draughts offered today was fully up to the standard of other late annual sales. The top of to-day’s sale was £33 10s for a four-year-old broken gelding. Unbroker.s this morning sold up to £27; good three and four-year-olds sold up to £24, the average being about £l7; less likely sorts ranged from £lO to £l6; others £7 to £lO. There was quite spirited bidding this afternoon for the broken draughts. Good four to six-year-olds brought from £24 to £33 10s; good sorts, showing a bit of quality blood, £l7 to £25; others £lO to £ls.
