ENGLISH TENNIS TEAM
HERE NEXT MONTH AUCKLAND L.T.A. MEETS The English lawn tennis team, consisting of Austin, Collins, Greg* ory, and Higgs, is expected tb arrive in New Zealand on October 22, and leave for Sydney ort November 9. The New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association advised the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association last evening that it had been unable to have the date of arrival postponed. “We certainly hope that they may arrive in November,” said the president, Mr. E. Hickson, “but if they do not, we will have to take a chance with -the weather and hope for the best.” The secretary, Air. L. W. Swan, brought down a statement showing that the art union funds were gradually being whittled away. He suggested that more revenue should be obtained by increasing the subscriptions. The art union funds in the balance sheet of May, 1927, were £5,000 8s lOd, and the balance in tlie capital account on May 31, 1928, was £3,865 4s 3d. After discussion, Mr. V. R. Johns gave notice of motion that rule 9 should be altered to allow subscriptions to be increased. It was stated that at present the subscription rates were: Country clubs, fid; less than four courts, 9d; and full rate. •3s 6d. Clubs and players were benefiting from the sale of balls at rates lower than retail ones by the association. Three new clubs, Puriri, Edendale, and Vauxhall, wer granted affiliation. The president reported that suburban clubs were very enthusiastic about their inter-club competition.
