Will Episode Be Best Three-Year-Old?

RACING AT WANGANUI 'I’HE first of the three-year-old classics, the Wanganui Guineas, in which Episode will make her initial appearance of the season, comes up for decision at Wanganui, with the N.Z. Eclipse Stakes and the Debutante Stakes being run on Saturday. To-morrow’s programme at Wanganui is reviewed below.

The Wanganui spring meeting is the first really serious one of the many important fixtures at this stage of racing proceedings, more particularly with Avondale and the other meetings closely following. This season there is only a week between Wanganui and Avondale, so that the form at the riverside course should be an illuminating factor when it comes to sum-ming-up form for future events. One thing can always be depended upon at Wanganui, and that is the good going, the sandy nature of the track being responsible for this. On the other hand the course is small and round, a back stretch of two furlongs and a run home of about a. distance (240 yards) with the remainder on the turn, showing that the horses with early speed will possess an undeniable advantage. A field of seventeen will contest the opening event, he 11.45 MAIDEN RACE Six furlongs st. lb. st. lb. Upoko ...SO Lady AloTeremoana . 8 0 phen ... 7 7 Otauru Lass . S 0 Baskier ... 7 7 Foreign Cashier .... 7 7 Fancy ... S 0 Black Odin . . 7 7 Marica ... 8 0 Skypoint ... 77 Vaux, .... S 0 The Warden. 7 7 Katuna .... S 0 Mauriaena ..77 Black Maire . S 0 Salt Petrel . 7 7 Irish Moss ..SO Several of the above were seen out at Marton last week, and those that showed a bit of form there were Upoko, Otauru Lass, Foreign Fancy, Marcia, Black Maire, and The Warden, Mauriaena being a bit too slow over the early stages to get a position.

Marci aand The Warden filled the places behind Dermod, both coming from fairly well back, and that may not be permitted at Wanganui. Terernoana showed good form at Dannevirke, while Baskier, Cashier and Salt Petrel are good ones to remember for future reference. The Warden and Baskier figure also in the Guineas, so it is difficult to know what they will take on. Both are good sorts, too, for The Warden was making his first appearance at a barrier when he ran third at Marton. TE REMO AN A and FOREIGN FANCY promise to come in for big support. The jumpers will be seen out in the 12.30 OKEHU HURDLES 1£ miles. Cohesion . . 11 5 Vexatious .96 Gaze .... 11 4 Olympic ..94 Brig. Bill . . 11 3 Troilus ... 9 4 Ballyfarnon . 10 0 Beaumont . 9 2 Polyphemus . 9 9 Clengariff ..90 Kilburn ... 9 9 Cohesion won at Marton with 11.2, and the consequent penalty now sees him elevated 81b to 11.5. Considering the fact that the Marton hurdles were flimsies, that fell over when tipped, it was practically a flat race, so that the penalty appears to be rather hard. Yet the handicapper had to follow the usual course. Cohesion is a good one, and even under the big weight may win again. Gaze was stale the last day at Riccarton, and if freshened up will be a difficult proposition. Brigadier Bill and Ballifarnon are two probables, and Kilburn is very fit. Vexatious shaped well on the flat at Marton, and if caught in the mood may be a nuisance. Olympic will be better suited by the going than at Marton, where he was backed to beat Cohesion. Troilus, Beaumont (who shaped promisingly over the easy Marton obstacles) and Glongariff complete a far better hurdle field than has been seen out at Wanganui in the spring for many seasons. It looks as if the two topweights, COHESION and GAZE will get most support. Next on the programme is the 1.15 PUTIKI HACK HANDICAP 1 mile 110 yards Singleton . . 8 33 Moorgas ..80 Discourse . . 8 13 Vigilance . . 7 U Pale Star . . 8 12 Flying Shot .79 Gold Cure ..89 Calamine . 7 0 Kawhakina . S 9 Green Acre 7 0 Quarter Deck 8 6 Calithe ..70 Slow beginners will have little chance here, for there is only half a furlong run out of the straight, and that may not suit Singleton, on his Marton showing, where he was tailed off half a mile from home. He might have been unlucky on that occasion. Discourse is a good sort, and then there is the consistent Pale Star, who, under difficulties beat a poor field at Marton. Gold Cure was unlucky at his last start, and will soon be found doing better, Kawhakina, Quarterdeck, Moorgas, Vigilance, Green Acre and Calithe are fair sorts, but when the numbers have been rung up it will be found that there is substantial support for GOLD CURE and SINGLETON. Ther eis a two-year-old parade to follow", after which there is the 2.10 SEA'FI ELD HANDICAP 7 furlongs. They are quite an interesting lot, with King Lu, Partaga, Dayguard, Pangolin, Orazone, Waltzer, Mendip, Te Koroke,

Kilperon, Lucy Rose and Auriculus perhaps the best. Recent form may be best to follow, and this should see PANGOLIN and DAYGUARD the favourites. Next comes the classic, the 2.50 WANGANUI GUINEAS 1 mile. Full Feather. S 10 Cyrille ... 8 5 Lucky Light. S 5 Baskier ... 8 5 Moutoa The Warden . S 5 Treasury . S 5 High Falutin 8 5 Episode . . . S 5 Consent ... 8 5 The position is rather overshadowed by Episode, the best two-year-old of last season, and her consistently line track work at Wanganui will see her go out a short-priced favourite. Her owner has won the two previous races, so ho is probably keen on accomplishing the hat trick. Full Feather showed some promise last season, Lucky Light won a Maiden at Hastings, Moutoa Treasury is small, but as game as they are made, and High Falutin’ and Consent, both from Tilley’s stable, will command respect for that reason alone, although they will not be bracketed. The Warden, Baskier and Cyrille (a half-brother to Valicare) are maidens, the first two being good sorts. EPISODE and HIGH FALUTIN’ may be the best backed pair. Eighteen promise to line up for the 3.35 DURIE HACK HANDICAP 6 furlongs. A pair that promise to come in for a measure of support are KNIGHTLIKE and TE ATIAWA. The principal handicap has attracted a fine field: 4.20 MARANGAI HANDICAP 1 mile 110 yards. Paitonu . . Gazeley 7 0 Queen Arch. 7 S There is not a great range, from the top to the bottom, and the field is as even as it looks. Paitonu ran badly during the later winter meetings, but Nukumiii and Black Mint showed up well. Valkon should be just about ready for serious business, for he ran a good race in the Marton sprint. Shining Armour was conspicuous at Marton after winning at Dannevirke, and Queen Arch is in her best form. Blimp and Horomea are a good pair to be with, but the course may bother Royal Mint, and Mint Leaf, too. Talisker, Bonogne, Catkin and Captain Gazeley are all fair sorts, but boiled down the two best-backed may be QUEEN ARCH and BLACK MINT. There, is a host of talent in the open sprint, the 5.5 FLYING HANDICAP 6 furlongs. Reremoana . 9 11 Oration ... 7 8 The Hawk . 9 5 Ruffles ...78 Kiosk ... 9 4 Day Guard . 7 8 Benzora ..91 Broad Acre . 7 7 King Lu . . ORATION and KING LU will be better suited here than they were last week, and in an open race they will command a fair share of support. However, it is decidedly a race that should be left severely alone, for it presents a regular puzzle. A whole lort will depend on barrier positions. The Riders The following are some of the riding engagements announced: R. Reed. —Star Stranger, Knightlike, Pangolin, Teremoana, Desert Lad and Hunting Day (second day). R. J. Mackie. —White Ringlet.
