REBOTTLING LIQUOR
LICENSEE FINED £SO APPEAL TO BE MADE Found guilty in a reserved judgment by Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court this morning of rebottling liquor, J. G. McGregor, licensee of the Rising Sun Hotel, was fined £SO on the first charge of three, the others being deferred pending the hearing of an appeal. When the case was heard on August 31, IvlcGregor had suggested that any adulteration had been the work of employees. who had been in the habit of helping themselves. Mr. McKean held that McGregor’s action in telling the Health Department inspector that it was all a “frame up” before the contents of the bottles had been analysed made it difficult to believe that he was ignorant of what was going on. After the £SO penalty had been imposed in connection with the adulteration of a well-known brand of gin, Mr. R. A. Singer asked that decisions on the other three charges be deferred, as he intended to appeal. “If convictions are recorded in all four cases,” he said, “I shall have to lodge four appeals.” Mr. Singer’s suggestion was agreed to by the magistrate, and counsel for the prosecution. Mr. V. N. Hubble. Security for appeal was fixed at £lO 10s, plus the fine and all costs.
