DUNCAN QUALIFIES
AUSTRALIAN AMATEUR GOLF PLAY AT ROSE BAY LINKS (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) SYDNEY, Tuesday. The first match play round of the Australian amateur golf championship was played on the Rose Bay links in fine weather. The 16 amateurs, including A. D. S. Duncan, of New Zealand, who played in the open championship on Saturday, qualified for today’s play. The results were:—Fawcett defeated Apperly, 5 up and 3. Sturrock defeated Headlam at the 41st hole; Duncan defeated Edgar, 3 and 2; Nettlefold defeated Bettington, 10 and 9; Hancock defeated Nigel Smith at the 37th hole; H. Jackson defeated Nankivell, 5 and 3;Schlapp defeated Leigh Winser at the 37th hole; Keane defeated Eastway, 4 and 3. A very short putt, which Edgar failed to hole at the 18th green in the morning round, made him one down to Duncan, after a round which fluctuated from one to the other, with a number of holes halved. Duncan holed a 30foot putt at the last, but when taking his stance moved the ball slightly, and forfeited the stroke. Duncan was 3 up at the 24th hole and won the match at the 34th.
