WITH THE BOY SCOUTS

The Rev. Claude Hyde, Scoutmaster ot St. Augustinfe’s troop, Napier, was in Auckland last week. Mr. Hyde is an old Auckland Scouter and had charge of the Holy Sepulchre troop, Khyber Pass.

He reports that Scouting in and around Napier is in a flourishing condition. In Napier alone there are seven troops and all are making good progress. Mr. Hyde is still keenly interested in Scouting and was glad to be in touch gain- with the Auckland Central District.

The first meeting of the new Advisory Board was held at District Headquarters on Wednesday, September 5. all the members except one being present- The meeting discussed much of importance and it was felt that a general spirit of progress was evident in\Scouting circles in Auckland.

A combined church parade of Sea Scouts took place in the Anglican Church, Bayswater, last Sunday, when there was a large muster of boys and officers. Canon McFarland, who took the service, chose as his subject, “Be a 1 luilder, “.urging the boys to keep their thoughts pure and to build on such foundations. District Sea-Scoutmaster Thodc was in charge of the parade, this being the first of a series which the Sea Scouts intend to hold. #

There was a large attendance of Scouts, parents and friends at the social held by the Kitchener troop and committee, in the hall of the Presbyterian Church, Mount Eden, last Friday when presentations were made to Scoutmaster Oxley and Mr. E. Oxley and Downard s long association with the movement, their efficient work with the troop, Mr. Oxley's valued term as Assistant Com - missioner for the district, and Mr. liownard’s period of service as District Treasurer. They were not really biddin- them farewell, said Mr Boswelh f, P they hoped that before long they would again be back in the movement.

Tho presentations took the form of Swastika Thanks badges. Tho Commissioner for Wolf Cubs, Mr. A. J. Veart, was also present. Mr. Holdsworth took the opportunity of announcing th© appointment of Mr. A. J. Gaily to the position pt District Cubmaster. Mr. Gaily has had long experience in Wolf Cub work, both in London and New Zealand. The Kitchener Scouts and committee were warmly congratulated on their achievement on Daffodil Day, their returns being over £22, the highest for any troop. At the conclusion of the evening Mr. L. P. Sladdin, the present Scoutmaster, requested Mr. Boswell to present the proficiency badges gained by the boys during the past few months, among them being a King Scout badge, won by Patrol Leader Jessop.

Beams, J.P., introduced the Chief Commissioner of the Auckland District, Mr. Holdsworth, who was making his first official visit to Papakura and expressed the hope that he would take away a good impression of the troop. He then called on the boys to give three hearty cheers for the Commissioner, and they were given lustily.

“During the interval the Commissioner inspected the troop and said he was very pleased with its smart appearance. He also congratulated Scoutmaster A. Slessor and Assistant Scoutmaster C. Kernot on the way they had trained the boys. "Among the performers were Madame Alma May, Mrs. G. O’Connell, Miss Ethel Turner, Miss Barbara Earl, and Messrs. Neville Walker (Manurewa), Sadgrove and L. Kernot. The troop contributed vocal items, a

bridge-building display and a humorous sketch, “The Burglar Trap.” The programme concluded with a camp fire sing-song. “Scoutmaster Slessor, in closing, expressed his thanks to the audience for their splendid support in such bad weather, and also to the artists for their able assistance. “The building fund will benefit by about £7.” Beaver Hunter, of St. David’s troop, writes: “Recently the St. David’s Troop celebrated its' eighth birthday, when the annual report was presented. Mr. Tribble, the Scoutmaster, although leave had been granted him till November, has fully resumed his duties, assisted by Assistant Scoutmasters Butterworth and Johnson. On Daffodil Day the troop shared the Symonds Street and Khyber Pass stall with St. Barnabas, and did very well. Competition among the patrols for the Patrol Cup is very keen, as the donor, Mrs. Robinson, has promised a medal to each boy in the patrol winning the trophy most times. About a dozen badges were passed in the recent examinations and three Scouts have now their King’s Scout and Second Allround Cords. “Another pound night is being contemplated.”
