Wellington Trots Are Next on List

CANDIDATES FOR HUTT PARK TWO AUCKLANDERS ENGAGED The first of the Wellington Trotting Club’s four one-day fixtures will be staged at Hutt Park on Saturday next, when some good racing should be witnessed. The presence of the Aucklanders, Medusa and Rolfe Audubon, will lend additional attraction to followers of the sport from this province, and the appearance of a few New Zealand Cup candidates will add to the general interest. Will Stay Well Enough Maxegin (Judge Maxey—Rheim Lass) may not be a good stayer, but he should not experience much difficulty in beating the weak opposition to be encountered at Wellington on Saturday in the two-mile trotters’ heat. He gave most of those engaged 72yds in a mile and a-half and whacked them at Addington. Must Have a Chance The breaking trotter Louisiana (Nelson Bingen—Muriel Dill a) should have a good chance of ann ‘xing some prize money at Hutt Park. At Easter Birkett’s mare won a two-mile event, although she was a trifle lucky to beat Anseline, and at the recent Christchurch fixture she beat everything but Maxegin on the middle day. Chance to Even Up Nelson Boy (Nelson Bingen—Love Bird), who has been threatening to win a 12-furlong square-gaited event for 12 months, turned up over two miles at New Brighton on Saturday. His turn should come again at Wellington, where he is nicely placed in a small field over his favourite distance. He might be unlucky enough, however, to find the erratic Katute do it right and beat him. Bred Well Enough The aristocratically-bred Katute (Nelson Bingen—Muricata), who has so far proved a big disappointment to her admirers, will have the chance of a lifetime at Wellington on Saturday, where in small fields she is on the front of the handicaps. With nothing to bustle her the roan mare may find her feet and go right all the way. Set Solid Tasks Jean McElwyn (Nelson Bingen— Miss Spears) is set a solid task in the mile saddle at Hutt Park, but it is not beyond her compass. The Aucklandowned mare is also staying on better and off a 4.32 mark she must command respect in the Bollard Handicap, although she will find it difficult to overtake Orphan (4.34) and Pageant (4.36). Loch Moigh was beaten in the saddle race at Addington recently, not because he was not good enough, but through striking trouble no less than three times on the journey, while it was said he was not handled to the best advantage. With his usual driver, Bill Hughes, in the sulky, the Nelson Derby—Flying Bells horse won a two-mile heat like a champion. His friends should not turn him down in saddle on Saturday. First Time Out Matenga, a six-year-old son of Harold Dillon, who is owned by the Lower Hutt sportswoman, Mrs. I. Walters, opened his winning account last year at the South Wairarapa fixture by winning the 2.30 mile in 2.22 3-5. In his subsequent starts he failed to make good, but may make amends by opening the new season at Wellington in similar fashion. An Occasional Shock When Electric Gold (Gold Bell — Rosina Elect) won at Hawke’s Bay in June, he gave the opposition a rude shock and brought an appreciable amount of gold to his party. Being a Gold Bell and only six years old. J. Stone’s pacer may spark more often this season. Drifted Outwards At one period last year Drift Wave (Petereta —Imperial Fan) threatened to come home on the tide, but she drifted outward again after securing two third berths at Nelson. She has just celebrated her fifth anniversary, so may do a lot better in future. Bonus Time Again Followers of the Berkett stable will be looking for another bonus from Insurance (Matchlight Woodvere). Last year when three* years old he dead-heated with Prompter at Westport, giving a promising display, finishing up the season with a third prize at Hastings.

Will Want to Improve El Direct (El Carbine—Grace Direct) is a five-year-old under D. Nyhan’s care who was only raced on two occasions last season. In his second outJng, at Hastings, he managed to get the minor portion of the stake in the novice class. Although generally looked upon as a sprinter. High Sea (Blue Ribbon-Ocean Wave) last year demonstrated that a journey was not beyond his capabilities. At Claudelands in December the roan ran Gold Dial very close for first place, and in March won the Wanganui Cup in good style. At Hawera in the distance items W. Oliver’s charge was always in the picture and finished

well up to the placed horses. He will do better this year when ready for the fray. Well - Performed Pacer The performance of (Huia Dillon —Fair Puritan) last season make interesting reading and are useful for reference. She started 11 times j for four wins, a second and three ! thirds. In her last start at Wellingi ton the mare gave a sorry exhibition at the start and was never in the picture Look Out For Nan Brent Nan Brent (Brent Locanda—Maural is certainly not being killed with racing. Last season as a four-year-old she faced the tapes twice, and in the second outing defeated everything but Rose Marie. Nan Brent is a promising pacer and -one worth keeping in view. Fair Credentials Awa-iti (Logan Pointer—King Cole mare) made her debut last year at Amberley, where, driven by his owner, E. Berry, he landed the 12-furlong event in 3.36 from a 3.45 mark. He was onlyproduced again at Ashburton, where he failed to gain a situation. He will probably do well this season. Promising Novice Rollo, who is owned by the Auckland sportsman, Mr. D. R. Revell, put up a smart maiden performance at New Brighton on Saturday, when he finished third to Sunfiish and Linkman. The run would do Rollo good, and he should keep Linkman busy on Saturday at Hutt Park.

Still in the Picture When Golden Bubbles won the 10furlong Seaview Handicap on Saturday at the seaside she ran the journey faster than did Jojly Chimes, winner of the tighter class mile and a-quarter. Although penalised 12yds in the saddle at Petone, Golden Bubbles will take a lot of beating if reserved for this event Linkman (Matchlight—Harold Dillon mare) as mentioned in this column last week, made a bold bid to break the ice at New Brighton on Saturday. The Reefton-owned gelding put up a fine performance in getting second to Sunfish, and on the strength of that run must be hard to dispose of in the Novice Handicap at Wellington. A Pretty Good Sort Invader (Rey de Oro —Experience mare) who attracted attention last year by winning the Maturity Stakes, his only appearance for the season, went close to performing a similar trick the next time out. He beat all but Golden Bubbles on Saturday, and Donald’s pacer will make things interesting in the Wellington Handicap at the Hutt. Good Second String Ces. Donald hae another string to his bow in the Wellington Handicap, with Real Light (Nelson Bingen— Ella wood) who like his stable-mate Invader, won at his only start last year. Real Light claims an engagement also in the Borough Handicap, and perhaps the shorter journey will be bis mission.
