AWAPUNI NOTES

SATURDAY’S TRAINING PROSPECTS FOR WANGANUI (Special to THE SUN) PALMERSTON N., Monday. A wretched morning greeted trainers at Awapuni on Saturday, a cold wind With intermittent showers being in evidence, while the tracks were very heavy. Despite such, however, the grass proper was open and the majority of horses with Wanganui engagements were sent along. Of the baker’s dozen nominated from this centre for Wanganui—a surprisingly small contribution —11 survived acceptance day, Inflame and Askari being defections. The former failed in heavy going at Marton and no doubt such influenced his connections. Askari will wait for the bigger fences at the Manawatu Hunt fixture. Teremoana is the centre’s sole representative in the Maiden Race at Wanganui, and, based on his showing

at Dannevirke, he cannot be overlooked, although there are some smart sorts engaged. The Rangitero gelding, however, gives promise of being a stayer rather than a sprinter, and the turning nature of the course might be against him. Vexatious had a run at Marton on the flat, the Thurnham mare acting as pacemaker for a period in the Tutaenui Hack Handicap. She, however, returns to the jumping branch at Wanganui, being 91b above the minimum in the Okehu Hurdles. On Saturday morning she was sent alone over a round on the grass proper, when she moved attractively enough. Moorgas had his first outing since being brought in when he ran in the Spring Hack Cup at Marton. The half-brother. to Crown Area looked in need of a race and he was almost totally deserted in the betting market. It is hardly possible that he will find the distance in the Putiki Hack Handicap to his liking. Track Gallops On Saturday morning, Keddar (R. Reed) and Holus Bolus (Mackie) were sent over five furlongs, the latter having the better of the jump out. Keddar moved up crossing the top, but Holus Bolus drew clear again in the run home to do the journey in 1.9 J. Holus Bolus figures in the Durie Hack Handicap, in which Callanmore and Desert Lad are also included, and the centre appears to hold a strong hand. Callanmore slipped over three furlongs alone in 43, but Desert Lad was one of the early workers, G. New exercising some of his lengthy string before breakfast. Desert Lad has not raced since he won at the Wanganui winter meeting, and he has been advanced from 7.9 to 8.4 and meets Callanmore on 41b worse terms. Blimp is Awapuni’s only representative in the Marangi Handicap, and Broad Acre is our sole hope in the Flying Handicap. The former brought off something in the nature of a surprise when he won the Railway Handicap at Marton, for it was his first race with the colours up since being brought in from his spell. Bred to stay, he should not encounter “any difficulty in seeing the 81 furlongs out successfully, although the heavy going at Marton left him slightly shin sore. Broad Acre, like his stable companion, .Blimp, has been up but a short time, and although a beautiful stamp, cannot be seriously considered just yet. Moutoa Treasury, who accounted for .the Electric Hack Handicap at Marton, when Knightlike attended the Paper Money filly home, is to essay still bigger company in the Wanganui Guineas. While she stayed on excellently at Marton, the extra two furlongs may find her out. Crack in Good Order Commendation, with R. Reed up, bowled along at three-quarter pace for the major portion of a round, the Limond gelding quickening up over the last three furlongs. Pie moved freely throughout and presented a veritable picture. While he will not figure at the Manawatu Hunt fixture, he may be given a run at one of the minor meetings prior to Wellington. Chelone, another of G. Jones’s team, likewise does not claim any immediate engagements, although the manner in which the Leighton gelding was anxious to go indicated that he is very well at present. Disrank, one of the younger brigade, will figure at the Hunt fixture In company with the Limond -Tivoli gelding (for whom Mr. W. H. Gaisford gave 600 guineas at the Trentliam January sales), Disrank slipped over three or four furlongs, but the Limond gelding was going the better at the close. He shows a lot of promise. Veteran’s Striking Form Elysianor (Mackie) is back in serious work after having been blistered and in company Vith Askari (Voitre) the i Klysian gelding was sent along over seven furlongs. Askari, who had possibly 281 b the better of the weights kept on terms throughout, despite having the outside running, the old fellow having- a shade the better of matters at the post. Elysianor is nevertheless rapidly assuming racing shape. Two maidens in Skyrider and Cold Air were companions over half a mile the former finishing a shade the better. The Day Comet filly has a very fair turn of speed, but she appears to CoM 0 4^ e 'T hat del \f ate in constitution. iate d AIF imS not been quite himself of Terehu, who ran disappointingly at Marton over the steeplechase fences, is stated to have stifled himself at the fence going away from home at the foot of the straight. Such would ac-

count for the sudden manner in which he dropped out of the picture last Wednesday. Scrap Iron, who had been installed favourite for the event, suffered a similar mishap, and time alone will disclose whether these two will have sufficiently recovered to participate at the Manawatu Hunt fixture.
