DEFENCE CHIEFS’ WELCOME

WILL STIMULATE FLYING IN DOMINION "I extend to Captain Kingsford Smith and his companions my heartiest congratulations on their great feat, which brings us very near to Australia, and may have great possibilities for the future,” says the message of the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. J. Rolleston. “I welcome their success as something which will give great encouragement to the art of flying in this Dominion.” Major - General R. Young, G.0.C., New Zealand forces, has sent the following message to the flyers: “It gives me the greatest pleasure to welcome, on behalf of the New Zealand forces, Captain .Kingsford Smith and his associates. Their visit will do an immense amount to stimulate aviation in New Zealand, and to make New Zealand realise the importance of aviation in the scheme of world communications. “Our welcome to Captain Kingsford Smith is the more cordial because he is an Australian and a distinguished war piolt. Personally, I deeply regret my inability to bs ir* Christchurch to greet him, but I have asked Colonel Gardner to convey to him my personal congratulations.”
