“MAGNIFICENT”
Air Director Pays Tribute to Flyers MAYOR IS DELIGHTED (Special to THE SUN). CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. Seen after the landing, Major T. M. Wiikes, Director of Air Services, said the flight across the Tasman was a magnificent achievement. Not only had it united the last of the British Dominions by air, but would doubtless do a great deal for aviation. “I am very pleased that the men who have done the flight are British, and particularly that one is a New
Zealander. It is a splendid performance that does credit to all four, and is a brilliant conclusion to their flight from America. “It is the best thing that could have happened for aviation here.” The Mayor, the Rev. J. K. Archer, said lie was delighted with the landing, for which purpose the morning was idea. The behaviour of the crowd had been exceedingly good, and he felt that the airmen would agree. He would be glad of an opportunity of welcoming the visitors. Captain J. L. Finlay said it was an excellent landing. It was unfortunate that the airmen mistook the landing and pulled up in front of the hangars, but the flight was magnificent. He could say no more. Mr. P. R. Climie, organiser of the flight, said; “It is a most meritorious performance, and I am proud to be able to welcome such men. lam delighted with the conduct of the crowds, which were well-behaved and orderly, in spite of the fact that they missed the plane, due to the Southern Cross pulling up in front of the hangars.” He hffd only praise for the way in which the traffic police handled the enormous crowds. The civic reception is postponed until to-morrow, and will be followed by an official luncheon. Sheaves of telegrams for the airmen arrived this morning from all parts of the world. AUCKLAND’S ASSURANCE NO OBJECTION TO SUNDAY “We desire to state that the sentiment expressed by the Mayor of Christchurch regarding an arrival on Sunday does not represent the view of the public of New Zealand. A warm welcome awaits you here any day.” This telegram was sent to the Tasman flyers before they left Sydney by the Auckland Aero Club. Squadron-Leader Kingsford Smith sent the following reply to the club yesterday: “Many thanks for your .kind message."
