NEW REGENT
The enjoyable picture now being shown at the New Regent Theatre, deals with the theme of the modern girl insisting on her rights even to the extent of thinking she can take the place of the man. The fight of the modern girl for independence is a live topic, and one, in this case, that is made all the more lively by the bright actress Bebo Daniels, who is seen in the leading role. Bebe plays the role of a young girl wh.o wears neckties and declaims on the equality of the sexes, and is forever betting her financee that she can do anything as well as any man. When they become joint heirs of the El Dorado gold mine, each wanted to run it. Finally, after Kathleen’s brave challenge, it was decided that she should take the man’s part in the enterprise while Jim would go along in the woman’s role. And the first one who called for help was to get the other’s half, thus acquiring sole ownership. James Hall, a Paramount featured player is seen opposite the star, and otliers in the cast are William Austin and George Koasonaros. Tom Katz and his Saxophone Band made another appearance at the Regent last evening. . That the many good things said of this band in reports from other cities were justified was soon evident, and on the final curtain the band was accorded a reception that few artists can boast of receiving. A variety of melodies consisting of plantation lullabies, military marches, jazz numbers and old time ballads, were presented, and the beautiful harmony provided by the six saxophones was most delightful to the ear. Attired in the garb of bellboys, Tom Katz and his colleagues held the interest of the audience throughout every second of their performance, and they must be considered one of the finest musical combinations that has ever visited Auckland. An excellent supporting programme of pictures was presented, and enjoyable music supplied by the Regent Operatic Orchestra under the baton of Mr. Maurice Guttridge.
