RESIDENTS COMPLAIN OF FUMES AND NOISE
FACTORY’S DENIAL LEGAL ACTION PENDING The last has not been heard of the complaints of residents in the vicinity of Balmoral Road, Mount Eden, who allege that noise, soot and fumes from the factory of New Zealand Wallboards, Ltd., are causing a nuisance. Last evening, it was reported at the Mount Eden Borough Council meeting that the council’s solicitors had been instructed to take action against the company. Irate residents recently made up a deputation and complained to the council that people in the vicinity were troubled by machinery noise, soot and fumes. Three further letters to the council said that nothing had been done to improve the nuisances alleged at the factory. They said that the noise continued all night, and benzine fumes were blown over the houses. A letter also came from the company maintaining that oil fuel did not throw off offensive fumes. A sentence in the letter reading: “Householders in the neighbourhood burn their rubbish and there is considerable hammering on Sundays in adjoining houses,” led Cr. F. Morris to make a vigorous denial. “We must stick up for the honour of the district,” he said. “There is absolutely no hammering on Sundays.” Cr. Morris said that for the company to say there were no fumes was a deliberate untruth. Some residents could even smell ,the fumes on clothes in their houses. The intention to take legal ’action will be notified to the complaining residents.
