LAKE PUPUKE WATER
ENSURING A PURE SUPPLY BOARD FRAMES BY-LAWS The North Shore BoroLighs' Water Board is passing by-laws to ensure the purity of the water supply from Lake Pupuke. Previously, the Health Act has been utilised for this purpose, but under the new by-laws those having property in the catch-water area will be much more restricted than formerly. Dr. H. H. Chesson represented the Health Department at the board’s meeting yesterday, and on his advice it was decided to prohibit the establishment of stables, cowsheds and piggeries over the whole area. The k'eeping of dogs will also be prohibited and cows and horses must bo kept at least four chains from the margin of the lake. Poultry and poultry houses are also to be kept four chains from the lake, and no rubbish must be burned in the area. The/ board’s solicitor; Mr. A. M. Gould, said he was doubtful if the board could prohibit boating on the lake, unless it was proved that boating would become, or create, a nuisance. Consideration of the matter was* deferred. DIVERSION OF WAIRAU COMPANY’S PROPOSAL That water from the Wairau Stream bo diverted to augment the Lake Pupuke supply during the winter, was the gist of a proposal placed before a meeting of the North Shore Boroughs Water Board at yesterday's meeting. it was embodied in a letter from Candy Kilters, Ltd., who urged that such a scheme would remove all fears of shortage, and the water could be purified at one plant before distribution. "It is only a waste of their time and ours, ’ said Mr. A. E. Greenslade, who moved that no steps be taken in the matter. 'T think we should get details of their scheme, said the chairman, Mr. E. Aldridge. “It would cost nothing and would not commit us.” Mr. Greenslade said he v»as against a drop of Wairau w-ater saSt->s into the lake and poined, out thsS >. similar scheme had been turnsS -i«wn two years ago. It was finally decided fca permit the Candy Filters, Ltd., ot place the scheme before the board
