PAKURANGA HUNT

SATURDAY’S MEET PICTURESQUE GLENDOWIE COUNTRY Followers of the Pakuranga Hunt Tad quite an enjoyable outing with tb® hounds on Saturday, when the me*t at mid-day was at “Glendowie,” St. Heliers, adjacent to the residence of the master, Mr. H. Bullock-Webster. About the usual number of followers turned out, and a touch of added colour was given to the green hillsides of this particularly picturesque locality by the horses, hounds, and riders. Conspicuous among - the last named were to be Sfeen the gay pink hunting coats of the master, huntsman and the whip, while the various coloured motor-cars of visitors and supporters of the hunt in considerable numbers on the roads lent. further animation to the pleasing landscape view. Glendowie and the surrounding coutryside has in past years been closely associated with the sport of hunting, and although these time? have changed somewhat, there seemed still to he a fair area of country to be hunted over. The wire fences md stone walls had received some preparations from some local enthusiasts in anticipation of the hunt at Glendowie and all seemed to augur well for sport. Scent was, however, persistently bad, most likely attributable to the recent rain or to the high keen wind blowing in from the sea. Huntsman ind hounds persevered in their efforts to find a hare, and worked over all the paddocks adjacent to the fine golf links most diligently, but without re* suit. This was somewhat hard to account for, as several likely places f3t hares to frequent were drawn. were, however, able to give thwr horses good exercise and to indulge in plenty of jumping of fences of various descriptions. Some Reminiscences Hounds were taken, up about 2-39 p.m., and the master, Mr. BullocKWebster, extended a cordial invitation to the followers and their friends to partake of afternoon tea at his residence, “Glendowie House.” A very enjoyable time was spent by all who accepted the invitation in partaking oi the good things provided, and in inspecting the fine old home and the interesting collection of well-known paintings and sporting pictures prints. Dr. Grant and Mr. Adams expressed thanks on behalf of the ban to Mr. and Mrs. Bullock-Webster their hospitality, and Mr. Bullock-'V' e ster in reply recounted some very in* teresting reminiscences of hunting ® the St. Heliers district many years a*-”-and in particular of previous occasions of the entertaining of the hunt by former owner at “Glendowie House the days of that well-rememberee huntsman, the late Mr. Tom Brown.
