SCARLET FEVER AND MUMPS
OUTBREAK AT WHANGAREI HOSPITAL HEAVILY TAXED (From Our Onm Correspondent. » WHANG ARBI, To-ria . Dr. J. Hall, superintendent «>f the Whangarei Hospital, reported *** the board this morning that he expected tho possibility of a small epidemic of scarlet fever and mumps. There wero seven cases of scarlet fever in the iinstitution at present, which was very heavily taxed to find sufficient accommodation. Beds. ai present vacant, would have to be kepi for urgent cases. Mumps patients, unless the cases wero complicated, could not be treat el in tho hospital. A letter from Dr. T. H. Valintino. Director-General of Health, advised the beard to-day that the consent of the Minister of Health was being obtained for the proposed addition of a children’s ward to the hospital. Subject to confirmation of readjustments on the plans with these additions, the present acute lack tf accomodation will be relieved.
