In the match at Bournemouth. Gentlemen v. Players, the Players in the second innings made 367. The Gentlemen in the second innings made 302 for nine (Carr 63, Robbins S 7, Pender 60). The Geilemen won by one wicket. At Scarborough in the match between C. I. Thornton's eleven and the Bnglish team for Australia, Thornton’s team in the first innings made 293. Tate took five for 71. The M.C.C. team in the second innnings made 236 for five, and declared (E. Tyldesley 75, Leyland 76. Thornton’s team in the second innings made 189 for three (Duleepsinhji 68, Wyatt 95 not out). The match was drawn. Kent v. M.C.C.—Kent, second innings, 394 (J. Bryan 140). Marylebone, second innings, 289 for six (A. H. Gilligan 88, Russell 81). Marylebone won by four wickets. Freeman, who took four wickets for 117, brought his season’s total to 291 wickets, beating the record made in 1895 of the late Tom Richardson (Surrey), who took 290 wickets that year.
The famous Surrey fast bowler, Tom Richardson, of Mitcham, in 1895 bowled 1,690.1 overs, 463 maidens, for 4,170 runs, and took 290 wickets, average 14.37. In 1893, against Warwickshire, he took four wickets with four consecutive balls.
