Too Shrewd!
The man who stood on London Bridge and offered real sovereigns for 1s each, and couldn’t get rid of one, had a disciple at the Sydney ponies last week. The “shrewd” Londoners would not risk looking ridiculous by falling for such an obvious trick. But they missed only 19s by their “cleverness.” At Sydney’s Victoria Park the “shrewd” punters missed £lO5. Trainer Skelton accepted £IOO to £lO cash about Sunny C’s chance in the second division of the Novice. Turning around, he noticed that the horse was to be ridden by a boy who isn’t his favourite rider by a long chalk. With the idea of cutting his losses, Skelton offered the ticket back to the book for £6. But the penciller wasn’t doing any buying. “I’ll sell it to any of you for a fiver,” the backer told the world at large. But a grinning herd of punters, with evil ideas that Sunny C must be dead, left him with it. But the grin was on Skelton’s face when Sunny C politely strolled home by half a length.
