ANSWERS TO PUZZLED GARDENERS
A. McL., Herne Bay: (1) Anemones and Ranunculus should be sown about the middle of October for flowering' next spring. (2) Bulbrous plants that are withering may be affected by woodlice eating the roots. Lift one and see. Application of artificial manures often brings on this appearance. (3) Brompton Stocks are not for winter flowering. In February sow Beauty Stocks, which should then bloom from May onwards. (4) Shift Japanese Iris to the dampest position in the garden. They will probably do better as the better weather comes round. Rotted cow manure dug m the soil is far better than White Island No. 1. (5) Sow Dahlia seed at once in boxes and transplant when large enough to handle. J. A. Henderson: Broad Beans should be sown a month earlier than those now ready, and then they will mature before the bumble bee is about and also escape rust. Spray now with Arsenate of Lead, two teaspoonfuls per gallon.
