GIRL’S CAR SOMERSAULTS “SAILED THROUGH THE AIR" A girl driver had an amazingly lucky escape during the first race for women organised by the j Brooklands Automobile Racing Club on the famous track. Driving a small Bugatti in a practice run, Miss M. M. Bond, the Kent girl motorist, crashed at 98 m.p.h. The car turned a somersault and careered down the banking to the grass. After the crash Miss Bond was far more composed than any who rushed to her aid. “What a pity it has happened,” she said, as she gazed upon the wrecked machine. “Can’t you possibly get it j ready for to-night’s race?” “The car was behaving beautifully,” said Miss Bond. “I was travelling at 95 miles an hour when I caught a bump, and the next second I was sailing through the air. I did not have even bruises; there was just a slight cut on my leg. “One of my shoes was torn completely off my foot, but my foot was not in it!” The tail of the car was crumpled up like tinfoil. The steering wheel was smashed, and one of the rear wheels was buckled and had a burst tyre. Miss Bond had to become a spectator instead of a competitor in the women’s race, over about 5J miles. There were three competitors who had never done any track racing before. They proved their ability by taking the first three places, and also exceeded the speed of men in two previous races.
