FLIPPANCY RESENTED
MR. VAILE’S £I,OOO “SALARY” ROAD BOARD WAS SERIOUS Resenting the misunderstanding caused by the alleged flippancy of Mr. IT. E. Vaile, president of the War Memorial Museum, a deputation from the Mount Roskill Road Board called at The Sun and detailed what happened when Mr. aVile waited on the Board. rjMTEY said that on June 12. Mr. Vaile and Mr. G. E. Archery w aited on the Road Board appealing for a contribution from the district ratepayers in aid of the War Memorial Museum. During the course of Mr. Yaile’s speech, and in reply to a question from a member of the board asking how much he (Mr. Valle) would be paid, Mr. Yaile replied in all seriousness that liis salary would be reduced to £I,OOO a year. The Road Board entered into the discussion seriously, not intending to make a joke of it. The deputation contented that Mr. Vaile should have explained that his position was purely an honorary oue. If the business of the institute and museum was to be conducted in Mr. Vaile’s flippant fashion as shown at the Road Board, it behoved ical bodies, said the deputation, to consider seriously the voting of its ratepayers' money to the cause advocated by Mr. Vaile while the institute was under ni jurisdiction.
