DEFECTIVES BILL

WOMEN URGE FURTHER CONSIDERATION MINISTER AGAINST DELAY Stating that the Mental Defectives Bill was being considered by a special Parliamentary committee, the Hon. J. A. Young, Minister of Health, has written to the Auckland women’s branch of the New Zealand Labour Party. Mr. Young’s letter was in reply to a resolution made by the branch urging that, owing to the serious divergence of scientific opinion, the passage of the Bill into law should be delayed until its provisions have been considered. The Minister’s reply added that he considered the defectives question so urgent that the Bill could not possibly be delayed. This was reported at a meeting of the branch on Thursday, when Mrs. Soljak presided. Accounts connected with the juvenile fancy dress ball held recently by the branch showed that the event had been successful. A letter from the headquarters of the Women’s International League at Geneva announced that the next international congress will be held at Prague. Czecho-Slovakia, in July, 1929. The Auckland branch was invited to send delegates and remits for consideration. Subjects chosen by the meeting were: “Abolition of Conscription in All Countries,” “Motherhood Endowment,” "Maternal Mortality,” “Child Welfare,” “Sex Hygiene,” and “Universal Disarmament.”
