Well-Bred Youngsters Tried At Marton

Twelve months ago Mr. A. B. M illiams produced Knightlike in the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui, the first race of the season for two-year-olds. The Paladin colt won that event in a style that was most impressive, and great things were subsequently expected of him. However, it is well known that lie went right off, and until he won the hack sprint at Hastings recently, as a three-year-old. he gave only a glimmer of his promising early form. Before commencing his racing career at Wanganui Knightlike was given a run in the parade at the Marton meeting, and then he certainly looked forward enough to do things. Another Early One? Bearing this fact in mind, considerable interest was taken in the chestnut two-year-old that trainer Jefferd produced in the parade at Marton on "W ednesday for his patron. This youngster was Hunting Day, a fine upstanding colt by imported Hunting Song (a son of Hurry On), not too much on the leg, and well proportioned over all, with just that little bit of surplus condition to work off with a few sharp sprints to bring him up to concert pitch. Hunting Day is from Gay (by Gazeley from Amusement), and claims relationship to Many Colours and Olympic. A couple of this youngster’s relatives in Salamander and Optimistic are at present in work at Ellerslie, but from the indications Hunting Day should be a Gloaming in comparison. In The Classics Hunting Day is engaged in most of the two-year-old classics, including the Avondale Stakes, and the Welcome Stakes at Ellerslie, so that if he goes on all right we shall see him here shortly. But Hunting Day was not the winner of the parade at Marton. That honour, if such it could be called, went to Francolin, a shapely brown filly by Paper Money from the one-time speedy Philomela. This mare has been almost a failure at the stud, although Monoxide saved her from being completely so. However, Francolin should add lustre to the family record. She

is trained by 11. Telford, who ha, very forward sort in Dresden Chin* i» work. This is a. filly by Tea Tray from Refinement, so that she is enough bred. It is regarded as altnojcertain that Dresden China will make her first appearance in the Avondal. Stakes this month. Promising Sorts The field of youngsters bunched nearing the judge’s box, and there wts not half a dozen lengths separating Francolin, Hunting Day, Grand Jury Equitant and Court like from the othy, quintette that chased them home in the order named. Grand Jury and Courtlike are both by Grandcourt. the former being a,, first produce of Orozino, a daughter of a full-sister to Desert Gold. Tab!. Talk, the dam of Courtlike, is by Finland from War Scare, and her foal was the promising three-year-old High Falutin’, who was accepted for but was not produced at Marton Equitant. by Paper Money from that great mare Equitas. was green at th. jump-out. and was galloping fast when the others were easing. Useful Pair Another that hit out very resolutely until he was eased was Pont D’Or, by Tonbridge (who left very few of’ his stock before it was deemed necessary to destroy him a few months ago from Zemaneck. the dam of a real good mare in Demure had she kept sound Pont D'Or. like Grand Jury, is owned by Mr. Duncan Lourie, and trained by F. C. F. McKay at Marton. This pahshould get on the winning list befon their first season on the turf is r or eluded. Most of the youngsters seen out on Wednesday were very forward, as we) they might be after the comparatively springlike winter the country ha- n. perienced. Ona not so forward as the others, perhaps, was Mr. E. L. Riddi ford’s colt, Imperial Guard, by Valky! rian from Whitianga, and he is aflnv advertisement for the Waikato horst and a credit to his dam. WhitUnss was got by Absurd from Black Watch (by Tasman). «

The time for the spruit from the barrier on Wednesday was VI J. 5 which was not bad travelling for two furlongs 37 yards in holding ground.
