NEW REGENT

VAUDEVILLE AND PICTURES A wholesome comedy, filled with fun is the best description that can be applied to “The Fifty-Fifty Girl,” which will be shown at the Regent Theatre for the first time this evening. That capable actress, Rebe Daniels, who will be remembered for a number of delightful comedies, is the star She plays the role of Kathleen O’Hara, who bets her fiance, Jim Donahue, t'hat a woman can do any man’s work in a mine that she owns. After Kathleen’s • brave challenge, it was decided that she should take the man’s part in the enterprise while Jim would go along - in the woman’s role, and the first one who called for help to get the other’s half, thus acquiring sole ownership. They find the mine in the hands of Morgan, a clever villain who owns the adjacent claim. At the mine, Kathleen attempts to carry through her part of the bargain, while Jim dis-, gustedly cooks and does the woman’s part.

Morgan’s gang tries to frighten Kathleen and Jim away, but fails. Then Morgan tries to kill them in a mad chase through the mine tunnels, but fails again. Then Morgan incites his Italian miners against the now terrified girl, and she has to cry for Jim’s help. Jim snaps out of his petticoat role and, by strategy and a pair of ablt fists, saves Kathleen and the mine.

This evening will see the first appearance in New Zealand of Tom Katz and his Saxophone Band, one of the greatest musical combinations that have ever toured the Dominion.

They are under the exclusive engagement of J. C. "Williamson, Ltd., and will appear at the New Regent twice daily. They present a surprisingly novel and original programme of syncopation, but in addition each member is a vaudeville artist of unusual ability, providing in all a well-balanced entertainment. The Regent .Operatic Orchestra, tinder Mr. Maurice Guttridge, will present a new selection of music.
