WHAU BRIDGE
OLD STRUCTURE IN BAD CONDITION * To put the Whsty Bridge, on the Great North Road, in a state that would allow it to carry all traffic for the next two or three years, would xost about £7OO, and the question of rebuilding is now being seriously considered. The New Lynn Town Board advised the City Council last evening that It had seen fit to limit strictly the loads passing over the bridge to five tons, including vehicle and load, and that it had arranged for traffic inspectors to be on duty from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. The city engineer reported that the appointment of tlie inspectors did not seem to be justified, and would cost the city more than the repairing of the bridge. The diversion of traffic was having a very serious effect on Karaka Street, and others in the Avondale district, which were not yet ready for heavy traffic. He suggested that there should be a conference to decide on the controlling authority for the construction of the new bridge, New Lynn" simply being the authority for maintenance.
The "Works Committee has been asked to report.
