United Party Selects More Candidates
MR. J. S. FLETCHER FOR GREY LYNN
CONFERENCE NEXT WEEK (TIIE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Two further candidates announced by the United Party for the coming elections are Mr. P. J. Smali, of Palmerston North, for the Manawatu seat, and Mr. J. S. Fletcher, of Auckland, for Grey Lynn. Mr. Small is prominent in local affairs in Palmerston North ,and Mr. Fletcher is a partner in the Fletcher Construction Company. The total of the United Party candidates now stands at 60.* Most of the candidates and the party organisers are to meet in Wellington on Thursday of next week for a social evening, and the following day the first conference of the party will be held, to frame its full policy and elect its leader. * Mr. Fletcher, who is 40 years of age, was at 24 headmaster of the continuation classes for technical and commercial branches, Scotland. He was also a committee member of the Glasgow Educational Institute. For many years he was a member and director of the Fletcher Construction Company. In 1920 he toured the United States, Canada and Great , l . l f ain *-° study the latest methods of building and road construction. Oh returning he became Bunedin manager for tlie firm, and in that city was an executive member of the Manufacturers’ Association.
_ Mi*- Fletcher has been associated with Y.M.C.A. work in Auckland, having at one time been vice-president. Since retirement from business he has shown great activity and is well informed on political movements.
LABOUR BUSY IN KAIPARA
MR. BARCLAY WELL RECEIVED (From Our Oxen Corx'espoxident.) DARGAVILLE, Thursday. A vote of thanks and confidence was accorded Mr. J. G. Barclay, the Labour candidate for Kaipara, at the conclusion of a good meeting at Tangiteroria this week. Mr. Mansell presided, and the candidate received a good hearing. Mr. Barclay addressed a meeting at Kirikopuni, there being a fair attendance. The candidate spoke on similar lines to his previous meetings and received a vote of thanks. Mr. R. Bale presided.
On Wednesday evening Mr. Barclay addressed about 40 electors in the Tangowahine Hall, when Mr. Joe White presided. The speaker was well received.
FAVOURS TWO-ISSUE BALLOT
MRS. MAGUIRE AND LICENSING That she supported the bare majority and the two-issue ballot-paper in connection with licensing polls was the declaration of Mrs. E. H. Maguire, official Reform candidate for Auckland East, at a meeting of her campaign committee held last evening in St. Paul’s Hall. The candidate stated her attitude as the result of a request at a recent meeting of supporters addressed by the Hon. J. A. Young.
ELTHAM FIELD CLEARED
ONE CANDIDATE WITHDRAWS Press Association ELTHAM. To - day. At a round-table conference at Rahotu last night, when Mr. W. C. Green, Liberal candidate for Egmont, and Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, Independent candidate for the same seat, were present, Mr. Green voluntarily retired from the contest in favour of Mr. Wilkinson.
This will mean a straight-out contest between the sitting member, the Hon. O. J. Hawken, and Mr. Wilkinson.
