NEW TRACK SEASON

PROSPECTS IN AUCKLAND LAST OF WINTER SPORTS Sports on Labour Day will mark the entry of the now track season. Auckland ’nil! unfold its wealth of sprinters, middle and long-distance

runners, and an army of cyclists for a strenuous round of work-outs. Only two more Saturdays remain in the winter athletics season. Technical Old Boys Club members will stage competitions on the Domain tomorrow, and the Auckland and Altarana Clubs will unite to wind up the contests on the following Saturday. There will be no lack of athletes in the city this season. A. J. Elliott and L. C. "Williams are to head a band of class sprinters, including L. R. Hook, L. H. Meredith, P. Minns and K. Couper. J. Li. McCoy is to revive his dash of the last Dominion championships to step over the quarter-mile, but A. C. Garlick, T. E. Henry, F. Nesdale, Meredith and Hook will be among those who will trouble him. Over the quarter-mile hurdles, B. M. Murray, who is regaining his health, Nesdale, Henry and Garlick will prove an efficient quartette. Nesdale won the New Zealand title in 1924-25, and tied with Ramson, of Wellington, in the Australian and New Zealand championship last season. Garlick notched the Dominion title in 1926-27, and intends to attempt to reach his old form. C. Olsen, late of Otago, and onetime Dominion champion half-miler now claims Auckland for his place, of residence, and will measure strides with J. S. Watt, the consistent local man. Auckland will make a solid titlequesting bid at next championships, although Southern centres can place formidable men on the tracks. Malcolm Leadbetter, present sprint champion, can still produce his swiftest steps for Christchurch, and Charlie Jenkins, of Wellington, ex-title holder is not greatly troubled by covering the 100 yards in a shade over 10 'seconds And so tile parade of athletes goes on. New Zealand is prolific with sports stars.
