PROCRASTINATION
Sir, — Upon behalf of every swimming enthusiast in Auckland I wish to make this emphatic protest at the inexcusable procrastination of the City Council in connection with the installation of filtration plants at the Parnell and Shelly Beach Baths. It was not until the Health Department insisted upon the closing of the council’s baths at Point Resolution early this year that the council admitted the for insuring the purity of the. water supply in the baths. After much delay and discussion the council in March last decided to apply for a loan with which to install filtration plants at Parnell and Shelly Beach. In April the Parks
Committee —that able and energetic body which supervises the city baths—decided to agree with the council’s decision and to recommend the council to act upon it. After more delay the council decided to adopt the Parks Committee’s recommendation to do what it (the council) had decided to do in March. More delay—until toward tire end of May the council decided to apply to the Local Bodies Loans Board for permission to place the loan proposal before the ratepayers. Still more delay, until the Loans Board gave its approval several weeks ago. And since then —what? Nothing! We are still waiting for the loan proposal to be put before us in order that we may carry it at once. Even then it will he February at least before filtration plants can be installed, which means that for the greater part of the summer the baths must remain closedl Sir, the council has no defence. Its deliberate delay end procrastination has been nothing but scandalous, and the swimming-loving public of Auckland will not forget what they regard as the greatest scandal of the council’s administration. Possibly the council wifi now condescend to announce when it proposes to place the loan proposal before the ratepayers—and whether it also proposes to submit the ratepayers’ decision to its various committees before doing what it should have done months ago and install filtration and sterilisation plants at both Parnell and Shelly Beach Baths. H. HARLEY DEVEREL’X.
