RAMONA

EARLY DAYS IN CALIFORNIA A thing * of exquisite beauty, “Ramona” comes to the screen as a faithful film delineation of the almost classic story. The tale concerns the early golden days of California, and with the actual locations near at hand, a director who is partially Indian, and a star with the appearance of Holores Hel Rio, it is not strange that thepicture should impress with its sincerity. If the early sequences be less of action than those to which one is accustomed, the sweet simplicity of the story, the exceptionally artistic compositions, and the fine performances contributed by the three principal players, make ample amends. Then, too, the later part of the drama is fraught with blood-stirring incident. The massacre of the peaceful redmen by white ruffians, the slaying of Alessandro and the frantic flight of Ramona, are moments to be remembered. Holores Hel Rio proves that she can change her histrionic ability by proffering a portrayal vitally different from any she has offered.
