M ORE LIGHT ON “MYSTERY”
More publicity wos thrown on the •mystery” of the report on Auckland tramways made by a man since proved t o be an ingenious imposter, by ivy-, j r. Lundon at the meeting of electors held in Roskill last evening. posing as a baronet, said Mr. Luntlon, Robert W. Gunter while living in ponsonby, prior to his departure for Sydney, entered into an agreement w ith certaiti members of the Tramways Committee to furnish a comprehensive report on the working of the tuckland tramway system. In return for his services he was to receive £250 and submit his report within one month. Should, however, the time occupied be less than a month, he was to be paid accordingly. Gunter finished the report with the aid of a typist supplied by the committee in the space of a fortnight and receive % £125. Mr. Lundon further stated that Gunter was promised £lO a day and all expenses paid if he would give evidence. before the recent Transport Commission. His principal job wt>; to have come forward just as the iuuuiry was about to close, and ‘‘blow all the arguments of the suburban witnesses sky-high.” Unfortunately, however, while the commission was sitting Ciunter was temporarily detained in an Australian penitentiary. It was further alleged by Mr. Lundon, that Gunter was given intrpduc- , i o ns to six of the leading civic authorities in Australia.
