FEARED DISMISSAL
FAILED TO CLAIM WAGES BAKER AND EMPLOYEE IN COURT “Because he was afraid of dismissal, F. Harris, a baker employee of C. J. Mitchell, baker, of Pukekohe, failed to claim his overtime from his employer. He was prosecuted by the Department of Labour at the Magistrate’s Court. Pukekohe, yesterday. Mitchell, for failure to pay, was prosecuted also. It was explained to the 'Court that Harris had commenced work at 1 a.m. and 2 a.m., and received £5 TOs a week only, instead of 4s an hour extr ; to Counsel for Mitchell admitted the offence, but said that Harris x worked a short week, and sometimes did so for his own convenience. Harris did not appear, but wrote admitting that he had not claimed the extra money because he was afraid of being thrown out of work. The department’s inspector, ?Jr. Bircliall, mentionde that the award provided for double time for all work before the ordinary starting time, whether or not a full week were worked. Counsel promised that Mitchell would not offend again, and the Magistrate fined Mitchell £2 and Harris .Cl. Over .£ 22 in overtime is involved in the case.
