NEWMARKET BOROUGH
FIRE BRIGADE REPORT IMPROVEMENTS NEEDED The annual report of Mr. T. J. Watts, superintendent of the Newmarket Fire Brigade, submitted at the meeting of the Borough Council last evening-, stated that the brigade was still in the same station and improvements were needed. To some extent the brigade was still depending on the old firebell, although the telephone was a help. He advocated the installation of • a flre-alarm system. The brigade had been called out 36 times, two outbreaks being serious. Outside the district 12 fires had been attended, and six calls were false alarms. Confidential questions will be circulated among the councillors and discussed at the next meeting. Regarding street collections, Cr. G. E Smerdon said the number was growing and soon there would be one a week. It was decided to place the question in the hands of the Local Bodies’ Association. An application to hold a street collection in Newmarket in aid of the hospital wireless fund on Friday, September 28, was grunted.
