HUNUA OR NIHOTIPU?

AUCKLAND’S WATER SUPPLY

EXPERT STARTS WORK Mo time will be wasted by Mr. H. H. Dare, the Sydney water and irrigation engineer, who arrived in Auckland yesterday, to report on the future sources of Auckland s water supply. Having studied a considerable amount of data, he is to meet the Water Committee of the Citv Council this afternoon, and he will then proceed to investigate the position in his own way. This afternoon’s meeting is for the purpose of welcoming Mr. Dare and having a general discussion on the position. Mr. Hare will give an independent report on future works, the main question being whether the Hunua schemes, Alangatawhiri and Mangatangi, should be started before the Lower Ninotupu clam and pumping scheme, or vice versa, or whether the two should proceed together. Cr. J. A. C. Allum, chairman of ther Water Committee, stated this morning that Mr. Hare’s investigation would be fairly comprehensive, and would deal with the better source for development, the engineering aspect, and the capital outlay and maintenance. ‘ The object is to give the people as much water as they want without waste, and with this in view we want to be started on the next scheme before the Huia dam is completed,” remarked Cr. Allum.
