AMATEUR BILLIARDS
AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIP WHITE DEFEATS TATE The Auckland provincial amateur billiards championship for the Billiards, Limited, Shield, was commenced last evening. M. D. White, holder of the shield, defeated H. Tate in the opening game, before a large number of spectators. Both players made the game open, an d this was in favour of the provincial champion, who is a prolific scorer. A feature of his play was the half-ball shot, at which he excelled, and added more points by this method. White had a considerable lead at half-way, and from this stage dominated the play, running to points when Tate had scored 290. Tate missed a number of opportunities in the latter stages, but played a good uphill game, in spite of the fact that the balls did not run too well for him. The final scores were:—White, 500. Best breaks: 36, 28, 24, 33, 31, 20, 33. Tate, 290. Best breaks: 20, 22, 33, 20. To-night H. A. Bassey will meet H. Rae, play commencing at 8 o’clock.
