Marton’s One Day

BIG FIELDS TO-MORROW Little form to Guide Backers THE large number of horses from the Auckland province claiming engagements at the one-day meeting at Marton to-morrow invests that fixture with more than the usual interest, and in addition the approaching meetings at Avondale and Wanganui will make to-morrow’s form valuable for future reference.

With big fields all round, and in addition the first of the spring meetings of importance where fhe seven stone minimum prevails, the lot of backers, like the life of the policeman, is not going to be a happy one, for to-morrow at least. The course at Marton, where to-morrow’s racing is to be held, will be in good order, but perhaps a bit on the soft side, for they have had a lot of rain down that way during the past week. A start is to be made with the biggest field of the day. This is the 11.30 TRIAL PLATE Of £120; 5 furlongs

The luck of the draw, combined with smartness on the part of both horse and rider in getting out of the barrier, will play a big part, for there is not more than a furlong run to the big bend, with a 300 yards run up the straight to the judge. Those who have shown some form are Upoko, Dermod, Mauriaena, Cashier, Merxcis, Warfille, Bry Area, Tangerim and Inflame, and to reduce this nine to a quartette there should be left Upoko, Mauriaena, Warfille and Merxcis, with Bry Area as a possibility. The two best backed may be Warfille and Mauriaena. The hack hurdles will have their say in the 12.15 RATA HACK HURDLES Of £150;; miles

Waltzer . . 9 11 Cohesion, despite his failure in the heavy ground at Bannevirke, must be expected to play a big part, here, for he is one of the most promising hurdlers seen out since the jumping season started. Sir Moment will have a royal show if the course is really -muddy, a state of affairs that will also suit Waltzer. Then there are San Fera, Olympic, Beaumont and Red Bank, all making for an even field judiciously treated by the handicapper. The most fancied are likely to be Cohesion and Waltzer. Another big field will come out for the third event, the

Of the above, form very recently has been shown by Pangolin, Singleton, Abisogne, Miss Mercia and Monsogne. Catkin is in rare fettle, according to Trentham advices, and Lady’s Boy galloped a great trial on Saturday at Wanganui. Gold Cure is highly thought of, and Maui is good. Moorgas and Lucy Rose were promising two-year-olds last season, and if the latter can foot it with the pacemakers —this was her difficulty previously—she will be in at the finish. Those mentioned appeal as the best of the 23 accepted for, and with backers a preference may be expressed for Pangolin and Lady’s Boy. After an interval of an hour, to leave time for the youngsters’ parade, comes the principal event, the

Nukumai has shown up in this event in past seasons, and he is well seasoned now. Bisox, who will be ridden by R. Reed, also has winning form, and it is doubtful if the topweight can successfully concede her a stone. Vivo is always likely to launch a surprise, and Polonett at Bannevirke showed that he is returning to form. Queen Arch (L. Manson) will find the conditions to suit, and on her gallops at Te Aroha last, week she will take a lot of beating. Royal Mint won this race 12 months ago,, but has not shown a great deal of form since last spring. Shining Armour seems to have benefited by the change of stables, and liis win at Bannevirke shows that he cannot be despised. Horomea is well and Kilmiss, who showed form at Riccarton, will be handy if well placed at the turn. Orazone, Te Koroke, Nucleus and "Wanderlust are preferred to Captain Gazeley and Brigadier Bill, this completing a nice but rather trappy handicap field. Two that make most appeal are Bisox and Queen Arch. Next follows the ’chasing event, tlxe 2.45 HUNT CUP STEEPLES

A quintette that appeal in what is really a little-known field are Master Arch, the Southerner Mataipuke, Haeremai, Trouble and Bel Sarto, and none of these is good enough to enable one to be classed as anywhere near a certainty. Two that will come in for a measure c/f support are Trouble and Mataipuke. As usual there is a pretty fair field in the 3.30 ELECTRIC HACK HANDICAP

This sprint generally sees a smart three-year-old coming out on top, and

there is a quintette of this age engaged to-morrow —Moutoa Treasury. Knightlike, Gold Bag, High Falutin’ and Whakaari, the first three mentioned all being winners, while High Falutin' has shown decided promise. Others that may be in the picture are Callanmore, Abisogne, Court Jester, Miss Mercia, Monsogne, XJpoko, Foreign Fancy, Green Acre. Teremoana and Tangerim, but it is likely that backers will prove loyal to the three-year-olds and send in the money on Knigntli.ke and High Falutin’. With 19 acceptors, and many good ones, punters are beset with a rare problem in the open sprint, the 4.15 RAILWAY HANDICAP • Of £210; 6 furlongs.

The top weight is expected to be on hand, and with an apprentice rider as expected his weight will be 9.3. King Lu will find the conditions to his liking, and he is well. Tea Time is a good sort over this distance, and it is in his favour that he races well, when

fresh. Staghunter is the best of his age engaged during the day, and may be prominent. Ruffles, the Taranaki -winner, Oration, Blimp, Lady’s Boy (who may.be started twice during the day), The Immigrant, Town Bird and A xxriculus are a few with more than a chance. It is a difficult race to pick the favourites in, but the Te Ax-oha pair, Town Bird and King Lu, should be in the picture. The concluding- item on the card is the 5.0 TUTAENUI HACK Of £150; 1 mile 137 yards.

Limosa has a big weight, and so has Discourse, and neither may yet be ready for serious business. ~ Pale Star has had the benefit of recent racing, and although the company is better here he may show up. Flying Shot and Kilburn have had recent racing, and of the others Wet Paint, Kindle, Shining Star, Metellus, and Mount Shannon are favoured. Totalisator operations may show that the favourites may be Pale Star and Kil-
