Science is Sweeping Toilers From Factories to Streets

Labour Leaders’ Warning

(United P.A. — By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.)

Reed. 9.5 a.m. NEW YORK, Monday. At Springfield, Illinois, the secretary of the American Federation of Labour, Mr. Frank Morrison, told a Labour Day demonstration: “We should not boast of our country as a land of prosperity and opportunity, with unemployment at its present stage.” Using the estimates of the United States Labour Department, Mr. Morrison placed unemployment at present at 3,000,000 persons. He said: “This means that 15,000,000

persons, or approximately an eighth of the population, are not continually assured of food and shelter. Such conditions offer a fertile Held for discontent, based on despair,” He stated that the employment situation had been intensified by the increased use of machinery, and challenged the attention of efficiency experts. “It is revolutionary,” he said, “since the machine, electricity and science are sweeping the workers into the streets.”
