OPPERMANN’S GREAT RIDE

He rode 5903 miles on the track in 24 hours. This was eight miles more than the record for the race. . Oppermann continued to ride ancl created a world’s record for 1,000 kilometres (about 625 miles), his time being 25h 19m 36 4-ss. He began to ride at 11 p.m. on Saturday. After six hours Oppermann was 11 laps behind the other riders owing to a broken chain and to punctures. He resumed and showed phenomenal ability. He rode furiously and completely demoralised the field. He assumed the lead and then went after the record and succeeded in breaking Oscaregg’s record by 23 kilometres 135 metres. The field comprised several first-class Continental riders The critics acclaimed Oppermann as the greatest all-round cyclist in the world.
