MANUREWA NEWS MEETING OF TOWN BOARD At last night’s meeting of the Manurewa Town Board a letter was received from the Main Highways Board advising that the Manurewa Board was responsible for the removal of the telegraph pole at the northern end of the railway overhead bridge on the Great South Road, and the Power Boo.rd for defraying the cost of moving their poles. On the recommendation of the act-ing-chairman. Mr. Gallaher, the clerk was instructed to reply that as the result of previous communications the town board had assumed the responsibility of moving the power poles, and could not accept the responsibility of moving the telegraph poles. The board’s solicitor said that Mr. Pegler was willing to accept £250 in full settlement of his claim for compensation for damage to his property on the Great South Road. The action of the board’s solicitor in deciding the terms of agreement was endorsed. Mr. Crossley attended and entered a strong protest against the high rates prevailing throughout the district, and made a strong plea for additional lighting in the Homai district and repairs to the existing roads. He was advised to arrange a deputation to wait on the board. In response to the request of a deputation of residents from Brown’s Road regarding the piping of the drain fronting their properties, the engineer was instructed to prepare an estimate of the cost of forming footpaths. The question of assisting the Tennis Club in the resurfacing of the courts was again considered. After an examination of the club's balance sheet it was decided to supply tar for the work up to the value of £35, the club to supply shell and labour. . The cost of the tar is to be repaid by the club at the conclusion of the season. MORRINSVILLE TOPICS For some months the congregation at the Sunday services at the Morrinsville Anglican Church have not been conveniently accommodated, so that the erection of a new church has been decided upon. With the view to meeting the difficulty temporarily it has been decided remove the present church' to alongside the parish hall and to join the two buildings. *- * * At a meeting of the committee of the Morrinsville Bowling Club the following additional officers were elected: Secretary and treasurer, Mr. T. ! OHAKUNE HARMONIC SOCIETY The Oliakune Harmonic Society gave ! a very successful concert in th* Patriotic Hall, last week, under the conductorship of Mr. Long. This is I the first time the society had appeared before the public and it received a great reception by an appreciative audience. The programme was supplied by the society, Mr. Gardiner, Miss V. Keucke. Miss Calder. Messrs Long, Gardiner. Blennerhassett and McGregor. Mrs. Angus and Miss Calder accompanied some of the artists and Mrs. A. Larsen acted as official accompanist to the ! society. DARGAVILLE STATISTICS Vital statistics for Dargaville for the month of August are: Births IS, deaths 1, marirages 3. The figures for the same month in 1927 are, respectively, 12, 1 and 2. ♦ • • The rainfall for August totalled 2.29 inches, which is less than is usual for that month. Rain fell on 16 days, the heaviest fall being on August 26, when .58 inches was recorded. KAIKOHE SHOW The annual meeting of the Kaikohe Agricultural, Pastoral and Horticultural Association was held on Saturday, the president, Mr. J. H. Orr, presiding. When moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet Mr. Orr said the past show had been a success in all directions. The attendance cf the public exceeded their most sanguine ex pectations. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £32 17s Id for the past year, and the assets amounted to £6O 17s 2d. The election of officers resulted: President, Mr. J. G. Ritchie; vicepresidents, Messrs. T. Guerin, J. Routley, F. Gaede and A. H. Wright; committees—Agricultural and Pastoral; Messrs. E. G. Broad, G. E. S. Brodie, C. A. Mattson. I. Booth, J. W. Orr, W. Pole; horticultural: Meed am es J. W. Orr, Kerry, Worthington and A. J. Wright, Messrs. L. W. Morgan. H. Rogers and Rev. H. J. Ryburn; auditor, Mr. Heslop: secretary, Mr. A. Ellery; treasurer. Mr. F. W. Bean. It was decided to hold the next she w on March 16. 1929. The secretary. Mr. Ellery, was the recipient of eulogistic remarks for his services during the past season and was voted an honorarium of £lO 10s. TE PUKE INTERESTS A meeting of delegates of branches of the New ,Zealand Farmers* Union was held at Te ?uke, to establish a sub-union for the Tauranga-Whaka-tane district. Delegates were present from Te Puke, Opotiki, Taneatua, Paengaroa, Pongakawa. Manawahe. Otakiri and Awakeri. Mr. H. J. Gill, Te Puke, presided. A scheme for the promotion of a sub-union was arranged and the election of officers resulted; President, Mr. H. J. Gill; vice-presidents, Messrs. C. E. S. Gane, Omokoroa, and Bradshaw, Opotiki. A protest was voiced against- the action of merchants in deducting 4d a bushel on maize where the weight of the sacks exceeded 2001 b. The meeting expressed itself in favour of the Government guaranteeing a minimum price for pork instead of paying a subsidy on pork exported. KING COUNTRY NEWS Practically all the local bodies ni the King Country were represented at the big conference held in TtOmarunui, with the object of discussing a plan to form one. big association that would work for King Country interests as a whole. Mr. A. S. Laird was elected chairman, and explained that the meeting had been convened by the Te Kuiti Chamber of Commerce. After a lengthy discussion the meeting resolved to form a King Country Advancement League. the following officers being appointed: Mr. H. T. Morton (Te Kuiti), president: executive, G. E. Afanson (Mayor of Taumarunui), G. Goldfinch (Mayor of Ohakunp), T. H. Crocker (chairman of the Kaitieke County Council), S. R Craig (presidnet of the Te Kuiti Chamber of Commerce). L. R. Jones (chairman of the Waitomo County Council), F. Romayne (chairman of the Ohura County Council) and J. Potts (chairman of the Otorohanga County Council). Secretary, Mr. A. W. White, of Te Kuiti. * * * The ru^tmaster, Mr. X. R. Mclsaac, supplies the following vital statistics for the Taumarunui district for the month of August: Births 16, deaths 3. marriages 5. Total rainfall, 3.33 inches, as against 6.21 inches for the same month last year. * * * A meeting of the Taumarunui district branch of the Waimarino Electorate Labour Representation Party considered a report presented by the secretary, Mr. W. Seator, which stated inter alia that the party in the Wairnarino had never yet been so well advanced in organisation, membership and finance. It was definitely announced at the meeting that Mr. Frank Langstone, a former member, would be the party’s candidate, and a propaganda committee was elected to further his campaign. * * • A large timber deal has been completed at Manunui. when a big gathering of native owners of the Puketapu block decided to sell the timber rights to the Pukuweka Sawmills, Ltd. The purchasers will pay the Maori owners £2.750 in cash, and £SO for legal expenses. The following royalties will operate: White pine, 2s 7d a 100 ft, totara 4s, matai 3s. rimu 3s. The meeting was presided over by Mr. T. Te Anga, and Mr. R. F. Harris represented the sawmilling company. * * » A meeting of the United Friendly Societies’ Association at Taumarunui decided to hold the usual Labour Day sports, but with a modified programing consisting of dancing, athletics, field and motor-car events. Mr. A. EPearson donated a cup for the motor events, and an anonymous donor a tat sheep for weight-guessing.
