SUMMARY OF RACING In five days’ racing there were 345 entries in 14 classes, from first-class yachts down to the little Takapuna boats. A special race was sailed for the visiting Cornwell Cup crews and Whangarei won. L class proved to be the most consistent racing class, with an average of eight starters. Practically every boat in the division took part. In the small boat classes racing was not as keen as in previous years. The committee is paying close /attention to this with a view to an improvement in the forthcoming season. A pleasing feature was the keen racing among the large keelers, which was much ahead of other years. Alerte was the most consistent performer, having won the Akarana championship cup, champion flag, points flag, special prize for fastest 14-footer, Wilkinson Cup, as well as prizes in the. class races. Prizes, apart from the cups, are worth £llO. NEW OUTBOARD "MISS ARAWA” Mr. L. Palmer, of Parnell, the wellknown designer and builder of outboard motor-boats, has recently completed a fine new speeder for Mr. R. Townsend. The craft is of the single step hydroplane variety and is modelled largely on the champion Miss Akarana. Built of heart of kauri with a beech bottom the boat is a masterpiece of workmanship. It will be fitted with an 8.16 Johnson motor, of which a feature is its roller hearings. It is believed this is the first engine of its kind in the Dominion. Miss Arawa’s owner expects to get 35 m.p.h. out of his little speed-boat.
