BUSINESS BRISK
FILMS IN AUSTRALIA MR. R. SHEPARD RETURNS Convinced that the motion picture is securing an even more important position in Australia, Mr. R. Shepard, manager for J. C. Williamson Films (N.Z.), Ltd., returned to Auckland by the Ulimaroa this morning. “Business is very brisk over there,” he told a Sun representative. “Competition is also as keen as ever. Union Theatres have built the big State Theatre, seating 3,000 people, and Hoyts have replied with the big Plaza, seating 4,000. “I fancy that Sydney is having rather a bad time theatrically,” he added. “The two big picture houses have affected the whole theatrical business.”
Mr. Shepard observed that the grand opera season was enjoying immense popularity, while Toti Dal Monte’s wedding set all Sydney alight for a clay. At present the great Congress had attracted thousands to the city, and it was almost impossible to find accommodation anywhere. With Mr. Shepard was Mr. Tom Katz and the members of his saxophone band, who are to tour the J. C. Williamson theatres.
